One of the most fascinating destinations in Zanzibar is Changuu Island, better known as Prison Island. Its history dates back to the 19th century, when Arab slave traders used it as a holding site before auctions. Later, the British built a prison here, though it was never used for that purpose — the name “Prison Island” remains to this day. 
Today, the island is famous for its giant Aldabra tortoise sanctuary, with turtles brought from the Seychelles in the 1800s.
